NOVEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER.
A lot has happened since my October newsletter. From challenging head-on north east winds at Rocktail Bay to some fantastic big water fishing for yellows on the Orange River to a trip to the top of Sani pass to shop renovations to casting lessons to…..
Report back: Rocktail Bay Saltwater workshop 10 – 14 Oct
The main purpose of these intensive 4 night workshops is to introduce and upskill fly anglers to the rigors and nuances of catching fish in the salt with specific emphasis on the southern African eastern seaboard.
Besides the technical and tactical aspects of the sport that are taught, catching good fish in the process is always a bonus. This is when wind direction and strength plays a critical role. If the wind is howling out of the north east, resign yourself to the fact that it is going to be a very tough day on the beach. If on the other hand the wind is from the south west (the stronger the better!), so your chances of catching fish increases.
And so this proved to be the case during the first two days of this workshop when we had a strong south west wind blowing. In the space of 20 minutes during our first early morning session we had seven hook-ups, landing several very nice brassy, bluefin and bigeye kingfish. Later that day and for the rest of our time there the wind changed to north east with the commensurate drop in catches of the more sought after kingfish species.
As with all previous workshops participants were unanimous in that they had learnt and benefitted tremendously from the experience.

Egerton: A fantastic new Yellowfish destination
A 3000hectare game with nine kilometres of pristine Orange River teeming with small mouth and numerous elusive largemouth yellows.
I was introduced to the game farmer by Hein Funck, a seasoned yellowfish angler and outdoorsman. Accompanied by Hein and seven other anglers our five night exploratory trip proved to be a trip to remember and the discovery of a fishery that is very special.
During our brief stay we caught well in excess of 300 small mouth yellows and 16 largemouth yellows, the largest measuring 76 cm fork length.
