THE FLYFISHING SALTWATER WORKSHOP

RESEARCH CAMP -ROCKTAIL BAY

INTRODUCTION

In association with Maputaland Travel, Ufudu Fly Fishing is pleased to offer their guests the opportunity to hone their fly fishing skills at this very private and secluded venue.   A maximum of six guests will be accommodated in the comfort of Research Camp that is conveniently situated in relation to two of the most fabled salt water destinations in South Africa, namely Rocktail Bay and Lala Neck.

Research Camp is situated in Maputaland on KwaZulu-Natal’s north-eastern seaboard, mid-way between Kosi Bay to the north and Lake Sibaya to the south.

This is a diverse region of forested dunes, wetlands, sandy beaches, woodlands and warm seas.

The Camp lies just outside of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, one of South Africa’s World Heritage Sites which spans a range of ecological zones.

Situated offshore is the sanctuary of the Maputaland Marine Reserve with prolific marine life, spectacular coral landscape, and dolphins and whales.

Few sections of the South African coastline are as unspoilt and secluded, and the area is known

for its superb, pristine dive spots as well as the loggerhead and leatherback turtles that come to

lay their eggs and hatch on the beaches.

The land is a low-lying coastal plain, lined with ancient coastal dunes that are considered to be amongst the tallest vegetated dunes in the world; these are swathed in lush green forest with a variety of animals, birds and plant life.

THE FLY FISHING WORKSHOP

The intensive four night workshop is directed at fly anglers who have yet to enjoy success in the salt or are new to saltwater fly fishing.   In fact, the fishing potential here is so remarkable that even the most experienced saltwater fly anglers will relish the experience

All fly fishing activities are hosted by Ben and include:

  • Two daily guided fly fishing outings to different venues at the best tides, targeting a variety of fish species. Comfortable 4 x 4 group transport provided.
  • Talks and demonstrations on leader construction, tackle and fly selection, tides and Moon phases, the timing and planning of a fishing trip, reading the water, where and when to fish, various retrieves, fighting fish, the proper handling, revival and release of fish, how to cope with the elements and safety precautions.

THE FLYFISHING OPPORTUNITIES:

Research Camp lies just outside of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, one of South Africa’s World Heritage sites, and in close proximity to some of South Africa’s most pristine beaches and rock and surf fly fishing venues.

  • Guests will be transported to all the fishing venues at the most productive times for the duration of the workshop.
  • There are several venues that we will fish, each with ideal structure and teaming with baitfish. The fly fishing is planned around very specific tides in relation to each venue and its physical structure.
  • Anglers can realistically expect to catch wave garrick, brassy kingfish, bluefin kingfish and GTs at every outing. This venue is renowned for big GT’s that predate on the many shoals of inshore baitfish.
  • During the past four years GTs well over 100cm fl have been landed and lost. Other highlights are brassy kingfish over 70cm, bluefin kingfish in excess of 80 cm and wave garrick that will take you into your backing… the list goes on.  You would be hard-pressed to find a more exciting venue!
