Fly Fishing – 2020 January

The year 2019 has come and gone. For many South Africans, this was a very difficult year due to our struggling economy, power cuts and political uncertainty.  Winning the Rugby World Cup and having our very own Zozibini Tunzi crowned as Miss Universe were but two very special positives to give us hope for a better and more prosperous 2020.

To all of you, I would like to wish you a very happy new year and may 2020 be one of prosperity and growth.

I am pleased to say that for Ufudu Fly fishing 2019 was a relatively productive year and I look forward to some very exciting fly fishing prospects and developments for this year and 2021.  However, I first need to report on the most recent trips and events.

  • 2019 October/November Yellowfish season- Egerton River Camp

The 2019 season at this amazing venue has been our best to date.  Occupancy went up to 75% and our first couple’s trip was a roaring success and is an option for future seasons. Our catch rate as well as the average size of small mouth yellows were also up on past seasons.

Particularly pleasing was the number and size of Largemouth yellows that were caught this year, not to mention those that were hooked and lost.  Three fish over 70cms and one of 98cm were landed and I am confident that in time, we will be landing fish in excess of one metre in these somewhat challenging fly fishing conditions.

I am of the opinion that the big water fishing challenges presented at this venue and the fishing techniques that we have developed specifically for these conditions make this venue not only unique but one that will test and improve your fly fishing skills. My optimistic view of this fishing is supported by the number of repeat bookings that we have, with the result that we have very limited available space open for our 2020 season.  See below.

  • Maldives Couples Trip: 11 – 18 November 2019

I had the pleasure of hosting five lovely couples on this trip.  As always, the food and service provided by the 14 strong crew together with the comfortable facilities on the boat were well appreciated by all.

The weather was generally very good with the odd squall sending guests scurrying for cover and making sight fishing challenging at times.  Fly fishing guests caught a variety of species that included GTs (up to 70cms), triggerfish, bluefin trevally, bonito and snappers.  Non-fishing guests had great fun snorkelling, swimming, exploring islands, sun tanning and enjoying the services of the on-board spa.
